As
well as the cultural interests of the Kathmandu valley and the wilderness ezperiences
of Himalayan treks, there are numerous fascinating places to visit throughout
the country. Some, such as Nagarkot and Kakani on the rim of the valley, offer
spacious Himalayan views, peaceful country settings and comfortable lodging. Other,
such as Buddha's birthplace at Lumbini or the home of the Shah Kings at Gorkha,
offer intriguing insights into the history of the country. Yet others such as
Tansen and lovely lakeside Pokhara are delightful places to relax and enjoy the
scenery. Nagarkot
Nagarkot, 2175m in the east is 35Km from Kathmandu. It is a finest hill station,
with the stunning views of the Himalayan range, including Mt. Everest with beautiful
sunrise & sunset veiw. This hillstation is far from the crowds of hustle &
bustling of Kathmandu city, yet at very small distance suitable for visit in short
time. Dhulikhel
Dhulikhel, 1140m, another hill station offers an essence of Newar township with
its pagoda style & cluster of human settlement, enthralls with beautiful panoramic
mountain views & sunrise & sunset. Godavari, boast of the Royal
Botanical garden. Another attraction is a month long Hindu festival held at every
12th year. It has the huge collection of flora around & in well-preserved
green house. Birdwatching is another aspect of nature one can enjoy here.
Phulchauki
Hill Phulchauki Hill (2760m) is the highest hill in the valley rim,
in the southwest of the city, is wonderful place for hiking & biking. The
hills has very nice natural setting & are also very good for watching birds
as it homes some 200 species of birds. The top of the hill offers spectacular
mountain views of Annapurna, Manaslu, Fish tail in the west & Dorje Lakpa
to Everest in the east. Namoboudha
Namoboudha , is Buddhist pilgrimage site & an ideal place for hikers. The
rows of stupas adorned with fluttering prayers flags are very soothing. The highlight
is the image of Budha in his compassionate manifestation & portrays a famous
legend relating that Buddha in his previous life had offered his own flesh to
save a starving tigress & her cubs from the imminent death. Kakani
Kakani (1982m), is a quiet & a remarkable mountain balcony in the north of
the valley for viewing the chain of magnificent Himalayan giants like Ganesh Himal,
Annapurnas etc & terraced rolling hills around. Shivapuri
Hill Shivapuri Hill, the 2nd highest hill in the valley rim is very
popular hiking area. The natural surrounding is very soothing & offers good
varieties of flora & fauna. This area is also good for birdwatching. The Buddhist
monastery of nunnery is located at the midway to the top. The breathtaking mountain
views in the north & the birds eye view of Kathmandu valley is worth viewing
from this point.
Daman
For a view of the breathtaking grandeur of the world's highest peaks
from the far west of Dhaulagiri to the east of Mount Everest, there is no better
place than Daman. It lies eighty kilometers south-west of Kathmandu on the mountain
highway known as Tribhuvan Rajpath and has a view tower fitted with a long-range
telescope. Lumbini
Lumbini , the birthplace of Lord Gautam Budha is located some 250 km west of Kathmandu.
The highlights here are the sacred garden, the stone pillar dating 250 B.C, a
sacred stone, that pinpoints the exact birthplace of Budha. The sacred pond, Puskarni,
lies right besides, where queen Mayadevi took her ritual bath right before she
gave birth to Lord Budha, the enlightened one. Gorkha
Gorkha, is historically very important town of Nepal, where the seeds of the birth
of modern were sown. Conquering King of the Shah dynasty launched their campaigns
from Gorkha and ultimately unified Nepal. The famous Gokrkha soldiers carry their
name as a tribute to their valor during this conquest. Gorkha palace the royal
building is perched atop 330m above Gorkha town, with spectacular mountain views.
The walk unto this palace is worthwhile to savor the splendors of nature. There
is also a temple of Goddess Kali, the manifestation of female force. After every
15 day there is sacrifice in this shrines which attracts flocks of human. Just
below the palace is a holy cave of a reclusive saint Goraknath, who used to live
here that derives the name Gorkha. Pokhara
Pokhara, one of the most popular destinations in Nepal, is 200 km in the west
of Kathmandu. Pokhara offers numerous lakes and the mountain like Annapurna ranges,
Machapuchare, Lamjung Himal, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri and many more, that are breathtaking.
Lake Phewa offers relaxed boating & fishing with the views of mountains as
mirror image in the lake. This is also a famous gateway for Annpurna trekking
& mountaineering sports adventures. Bandipur
Bandipur is an ancient trading town of quaint streets and charming atmosphere.
It is situated on a ridge top south of Dumre which lies 135 km out on the Kathmandu-Pokhara
highway. Bandipur can be reached after a two-hour climb from Dumre. A terrific
excursion here are the Bandipur Caves which attract both devout pilgrims and adventures.
One of the country's largest and most accessible caves, these limestone formations
have religious and imaginative significance. Tansen
Tansen is situated on the slopes on Srinagar hill. Situated at an altitude of
1,371 meters above sea level, the town has about 13,000 inhabitants and is one
of the most popular summer resorts of western on account of its position and climate.
Among the most interesting objects in Tansen are a number of artistic temples,
shrines and stupas, which closely resemble those of Kathmandu. Here, as in the
rest of Nepal, Hindus and Buddhists worship together in sprit of cordial ecumenism.
Janakpur
Janakpur, situated in the Terai region of Nepal, is a beautiful and historic city
dating back to ancient times. Legend has it that Sita, heroine of the Hindu epic
Ramayana, was born here and later married the equally revered Lord Ram. The city's
most famous landmark is the large and artistic marble temple of janaki, builtby
qeen Vrisa Bhanu of the Indian state of Tikamgarh in the early twentieth century.
The Janaki Temple is also popularly knoen as Naulakha temple because nine lakh
(900,000 rupees)were supposedly spent on its construction. Close to the Janaki
temple is another ancient shirne known as the Ram temple. During Janakpur's two
main festivals, commemorating Sita's birth and her marriage with Ram, these two
temples become a center of pilgrimage foe Hindus from both and India. Janakpur
has several hotels of mediuum standard and can be reached either by plane or road
